. Chick Version

So, I'm minding my own business in the Women's Riding class at Ducati Revs America when a woman approaches me and asks if I'd mind having some pictures taken later on for a magazine. I'm a little perplexed by this, as there are other more babe-like creatures in the class worth photographing. I tell her "Sure, but I will have to warn you that I don't photograph well." (I'm the Troy Bayliss of pleasantness, the Ben Bostrom of determination, and the Ruben Xaus of photography...you've seen it; sometimes Ruben looks fine, sometimes he looks like the fugitive cousin who gets liquored up way too much.) The woman dismisses my attempts at self-effacement. "We have a great make-up artist," she says. Well, who am I to argue if they can make me look more like Lucy Liu and less like Jackie Chan?

You know when you see skits goofing on photo shoots with the fan blowing the woman's hair and the techno music thumping away in the background? Well, it wasn't a goof in this case. It was all there...even the eclectic photographer with wonderfully over-sized glasses. I was living a Saturday Night Live skit. The only thing missing was that classic line: "Make love to the camera, darling!"

The end result of the photo shoot is the above picture, which appears in Sports Illustrated for Women, December/January 2002.
