Reader Paul is someone who've I known for a long time online. He asked if I'd be interested in going on a ride and checking out this guy's winery and Ducati collection. Why not? I do appreciate my e-friends and it's nice to be able to finally match a real face to an e-mail address. We met up on a Friday morning at Packard's in Ramona (his friend Kevin also came along). Although there was still a winter chill and I was suffering from the worst cold of my life, we had a fun and sporty ride up 79 to the winery. Fortunately for me, motorcycle riding has restorative powers that clear my head and dry my sinuses, especially when combined with an overdose of pseudoephedrine. Marcelo Doffo, who owns Doffo Winery in Temecula, is a Ducati collector (with a few other bikes thrown in). An American from Argentina of Italian descent, I think his life's goals are to make fine wines and to hoard as many Cucciolo motors as possible. He and his son were very gracious and showed us the bike collection and workshop despite the fact that we dropped in unannounced. Marcelo even sent his son to fetch some gas so he could fire up the '57 Ducati Sport that he rode in last year's Giro d'California. "It's like music," he said as he rapped on the throttle. I'll probably try to set something up with Marcelo and the Duc club in San Diego. He seemed very interested in having some sort of get-together with others who would really appreciate his collection. |
