. DRC at Streets of Willow ............................

. 6/2/00

This is pretty much all of the Streets of Willow. There's one long pit lane anchored by the building with the big old Unocal 76 logo painted on the side. The Kelleys showed up a little late so we were pitted away from the rest of the DRC members, who were near the Unocal building. If you can find the sad and lonely Zappy in this picture, you can see how far down the row the Kelleys were.
It's been quite a while since we'd last been at Streets. The Unocal building was still continuing down its path of half-assed construction. I especially like that thing hanging down from the ceiling, waiting to spear someone in the head. This is where we held the riders meeting. Tom Sera's meetings are one-part church sermon and one-part cop lecture. It takes a lot of self-control not to scream out "OK! We get it already!" Oh, permit me to point out the two toilets in the corner of the building. Well lighted, but no outside air source: three stars out of five.
Speaking about Sera, there's the man himself on his battery-powered, remote-controlled skateboard. He'd ride that thing down the track to take a look at something or another. Because the skateboard wasn't exactly a high performance vehicle, watching Sera glide along the track was kind of like watching a glacier move in the ocean...except it was a black-clad glacier with a hairdo not entirely unlike Elvis'.
Class photo: Tim Ford (seated), Steve Smith, Bob Setbacken, Chris Kelley, James Vuduc, James' girlfriend (sorry, name has slipped my mind), and Victor Osaka. I'm taking the picture, but since James' girlfriend is Asian and so am I, it's almost like I'm in the picture.
Chris and I are new to dirtbiking and tend to stare a lot at dirt trails. The trails behind the track look very interesting. Well, except for the part at the very top which looks very vertical. Although we've been really good sports about crashing in the dirt, there is a point of self-abuse at which we stop laughing. The top of that hill looks like one of those places where the laughter is sure to stop.
Chris and Bob swapped bikes for a session. Chris is exiting the turn on Bob's white Buell. Bob is following on the 916 and chuckling to himself as he watches Chris try to handle the washing machine on wheels.
Excellent knee pucks. I think Steve was a little disappointed that he didn't grind the tongues off of these buggers, but I'm glad he didn't -- who else would Tim use as a role model?
Nobody's really surprised by the desert heat. Next to the tire is one of those classic pits created by a kickstand in heated asphalt. And next to that is the tire on a tire stand sinking, sinking, sinking.
